Countdown to the School Holidays: 1 week, 1 day.
I have one particular friend, who’s the most affectionate, fun, colour wearing on house and body and positive person I know, who raves about how much she loves the School Holidays and the opportunity of being with her 4 children.
I have a further collection of friends who look a little frazzled by the middle of week 2 (if not before) especially during these colder, prone to illness, seasons.
We all need a little freshness. An energy injection. Inspiration. From time to time. So if you’ve forgotten to book flights for Fiji for the fortnight you may like to try out:
NB: New Zealand State Primary Schools take their Holidays Saturday 28 September – Sunday 13 October 2013.
Monday 30 September – Friday 4 October. Artz on Show (an Auckland based company) bring their Mary Poppins workshop to Tauranga for the first time. Bethlehem College. 9am – 4pm. $60 per day or full workshop is $275. The students (ages 5-15) will enjoy a range of performing arts including drama, hip hop, jazz, vocals, body art and classes of art and team building. I’ve had friends and family rave about this company. Their Epsom Girls Grammar ‘season’ sells out each holiday because regulars (kids) sign up holiday after holiday. I’ve seen snippets of the workshop in action and the only criticism I have is I feel the teaching is product based, in that there was a certain ambience in the room to ‘get’ kids up to a certain performance standard. This is not entirely negative though. The discipline, anticipation and rigour of getting show-ready provides a certain dynamic and teaches a range of helpful skills e.g. team building and perseverance. I just think it’s helpful for parents to be aware that there is learning that encourages the process (which may not provide a ‘successful’ thing to show for the experience/process) and there is learning that works towards a product. In saying this, through my childhood I performed in shows with Dance Education Centre and I LOVED the buzz of performing, the hot stage lights, the make-up, the adrenalin and the close friends I made.

Week 1 & 2:
Monday 30 September- Friday 11 October. Rythmz Dance Co use Otumoetai Primary School Hall for their Dance Break Holiday Programme. 8am – 5.30pm. $40 per day or $160 for 5 days in one week. “We believe children have enough going on at school, including a huge amount of homework and are pressured at an increasingly young age to excel and compete. Rhythmz Dance Co offer a non competitive, positive, respectful environment where students can come and experience dance simply for the fun and enjoyment of it.” I’ve done Zumba with Carla and had a blast. She is witty, positive and so much fun and I can just imagine she’d be like this with the kids.
Tuesday 1 October – Friday 11 October. Tauranga City Libraries. A variety of 1 – 2 hour workshops for ages 3 years to teens. Held in local libraries throughout Tauranga. Morning and afternoon sessions. Some courses are free others cost $10. Here are some course names to make you wanna dig further: You’re framed. Dream Big. LEGO and learning activity.
